Personality:On the surface, Beastboy can come off as an immature, foolish and irresponsible class clown type and that is for the most part how fellow heroes see him at first. Being the youngest original member of the Titans he had a lot of growing to do in order to become the hero his adoptive parents wanted him to be. And while he has grown a fair amount he hasn’t lost some of his more childish and goofy behaviors.
He loves to make people laugh and smile, often trying to make a joke when things get too tense or awkward. Often this turns out to be inappropriate and people just roll their eyes or glare at him, but he honestly can’t help himself sometimes. It comes from a deep need to be liked and cared for. He wants people to want him around so he tries to entertain them. His fallback tends to be shapeshifting into their favorite animals or something silly that can be made into a pun. When he does go out of his way to tell a straightforward joke though? It is almost always bad.
His immature nature can also lead to him jumping to conclusions or making rash judgements without thinking things over. Sometimes when people are behaving in ways he doesn’t understand like Raven being short tempered and moody, he lashes orally out and says things he regrets like calling her creepy. In the first couple seasons he was always quick to denounce when other members of the team were being selfish or rude, while apparently oblivious to his own behavior in the same way.
On the flip side of this when he cares about someone he is fiercely loyal, willing to throw himself at whatever might be threatening them. In season one Beastboy struggled to understand Raven and felt like she hated him, often causing him to grumble and growl and complain about her attitude. As more time passed he proved his loyalty and affection for her by protecting her even when he had lost all sense of self by transforming into a massive mutant wolf beast. In another case he helped to fight off an army of demons to try and protect Raven from her father who is literally the devil.
In fact his weak willpower and impulsive nature is often the cause of his problems. Such as how easily hypnotized he is or how he tends to mess with things he’s not supposed to, such as plugging a pirated video game into the Titan’s mainframe. It also effects his fighting style as he seems to at times just shapeshift into the first thing he thinks of, even if there are some obvious drawbacks to what form he’s chosen such as being too large for the area they’re fighting in.
He has shown the qualities of a leader though when push came to shove. There came a time when the Brotherhood of Evil kidnapped the other Titans leaving him alone with a ragtag group of Titans who had gotten lucky or fought their way to freedom. As the remaining Titans were about to give into despair and go their separate ways Beastboy rallied them together and found ways to incorporate each of their skills into an effective method of infiltration to rescue their friends.
